What genres of writing can you identify in Consider the Lobster?

This writing is mysterious because there are so many possible many reasons that was mentioned for certain thing related to lobsters.

What's so important about footnotes in this article? Be specific. Give an example of how David Foster Wallace uses footnotes.

He uses footnotes to explain certain things within his story in depth, by giving either a deeper meaning or other perspectives to the topic/main idea. For example, he mentions that he has lobsters scream while they are being boiled but in the footnotes it gives a totally different reason to why there is a loud screaching while the lobster is being boiled to death.

Does this article shift topics? In what ways? What does David Foster Wallace mean when he says "Consider the Lobster?"

The articles do shift because in the beginning it talks mostly about red lobster festival, different types of lobsters. It then shifts to how lobsters was a dish that poor people used to eat and how it is now a gourmet dish. It is seemed that he was trying to incorporate too many points into the article. He wants us to consider the cruelty that is being done with lobsters before we consider eating them again.
